Jan. 12 to Jan. 16 Week in Review

Happy Friday!  Today is the last day of 2nd Quarter.  I will be sending home report cards on Thursday, Jan. 22.  This quarter, I will write comments regarding your child's progress.  However, if you would like to meet with me to discuss them or if you have any questions at all, please send me an email or call me.

This is some of our learning that we engaged in this week:

Reading: We started Unit 4 which will focus on the story of the Earth.  We read about the layers of the Earth and the effects of water and ice on the land.  The third-graders are practicing the skills of making connections as they read, primarily between the books, themselves, and other books.

Word Work: This week, we focused on prefixes that identify number, such as "multi", "bi", or "tri".

Vocabulary: fossils, layers, trickle

Spelling: We are studying the spelling patterns of words with the sounds found in "wood" and "spoon".

Math: This week, we played a game in order to solidify the students' understandings of multiplication.  Then, I introduced division to the students using blocks and groups of kids.  The purpose this week was to have very concrete examples of sharing between groups so that the students can fully visualize what division means.

Writing: We are continuing our work with paragraphs.  We finished our paragraph outline and then wrote the sentences that would create the paragraph in an "accordion paragraph" style.

Have a great weekend!
Miss Kimpton
