Feb 17 to Feb 20

Welcome back from the long weekend!

Today after school will be the first day that the Science Club is meeting.  Anyone that has returned a permission slip is welcome to attend!  We will be working on designing a question to research this afternoon.

Our learning goals for the week are as follows:

Reading: We are finishing Unit 4: The Story of the Earth this week.  The students will be reviewing what they have learned about Earth as well as practicing the various concepts that they learned (irregular verbs, comparative adjectives, vocabulary strategies, contractions).

Spelling: Compound Words

Writing: The students are in the process of creating a paragraph about glaciers.  They will be finishing and typing them using Google docs this week, and they will learn how to search for and insert an image onto their document.

Math:
New Concept:  The students will begin investigating fractions this week.  They will determine how to divide a circle into various fractions (1/4, 1/2, 3/4) and make fraction bars.

Reviewing Concepts (on MobyMax, playing games, review worksheets):  adding and subtracting 2- and 3-digit numbers, finding the missing number in multiplication equations, writing division equations and problems, and identifying symmetry

Have a great week!

Valentine's Day

We celebrated Valentine's Day by studying the human heart and ways to keep it healthy.  We exchanged  cards and ate healthy snacks.  Dr. Allbright, a veterinarian, brought sheep and pig hearts, lungs, tracheas, and aortas for the kiddos to investigate.  It was a great opportunity to practice safe handling of materials, seeing science in real life, and identifying students' interests.

Feb. 9 to Feb. 12

This week will be a short week with dismissal at noon on Thursday. We will be opening Valentine cards on Thursday, and you are welcome to send heart-healthy snacks to school for that day if you'd like.  Please, do no send any cupcakes, cookies, etc. We are focusing on healthy habits this week.  Small candies are welcome in the valentines.

Reading:  The students are working on the skill of making predictions this week in order to further their understanding of a book.

Math: The third-graders are finding unknown numbers in division equations and are writing equations based on pictures.  They will also be making a bar graph to record their heart rates during different activities.

Writing:  They are writing paragraphs showcasing what they have learned about paragraphs.  They are working on these independently, and they will be typing them using Google docs.

Spelling:  We will not have any spelling words this week, thus, we will not have any paper homework this week.  As always, reading out loud for fifteen minutes is homework.

Thank you,
Miss Kimpton
